i came to stand at out shoreline

Hansheng Zhao

but it has gone

like missing a step
the tide departed
before i could arrive

underneath this empire of emptiness
lay crumbling pits
lined with blotched skin
pulled thin over hardness
harsh contours hug broken pieces
colour drains
beneath an unblinking sky
light slices the blue right through
to dry shadow

this numb sunrise

holds

and holds

the land longs to follow
to follow the line on the horizon
but
this place does not
wish to be remembered

not like this

ash becomes
of what had known water
i came to stand at our shoreline
but it has gone
what remains is

one part water two parts dirt
