WAUPOOS ISLAND

Nana anointed her babies by running soap

and the water

waited because it knew that about us

She tells me as  concern with fishing numbing stones

my sister   feeding from our rag

is  the island’s breast

I, real fear sand’d  the current pebbles of her gum

Near we babies notice a deer stood watching us bathe in the lake

Like she found us looking

  back unlike   the brush

but somethings fainter than    she

 found us looking

back like the skinned, earless fawn she gave to the water

and didn’t move because she knew that about us

I found her looking  like Mother   and other things

Mother,     and  waabooz  meaning  rabbit

masked god   and   others gods  like

     Mother

when she slid behind the land
