Fiction

We publish short fiction excerpts from longer fiction of 300 – 6000 words. Please submit only one piece at a time (unless you are submitting flash fiction, in which case you may submit up to three short pieces). For excerpts of forthcoming works, please make note of the publication date in your cover letter.

We are currently especially interested in fiction containing

  • Nuanced portrayals of women and gender nonconforming people
  • Authentic voices
  • Stories with a strong sense of purpose
  • Stories that are quaint and reflective in tone
  • Funny and poignant stories
  • Stories that feel topical and current
  • Elements associated with genre fiction (e.g. horror, mystery, science fiction)

Poetry

You may submit up to five poems at a time (totalling no more than eight pages). Please submit all poems in one file. Long poems and excerpts of unpublished works will also be considered. For excerpts of forthcoming works, please make note of the publication date in your cover letter.

We are currently especially interested in poetry containing

  • Powerful emotional themes
  • Incisive reflection
  • Humour
  • Unusual perspectives
  • Collective and social themes

Nonfiction

We publish personal essays, literary essays, reviews, interviews and experimental hybrid forms. We consider essays from 600 – 6000 words. For excerpts of forthcoming works, please make note of the publication date in your cover letter.

We are currently especially interested in nonfiction containing

  • Social and cultural commentary
  • Racial commentary
  • Women and LGBTQ2S+ voices
  • Explorations of place
  • An immersive writing style
  • Mundane topics explored through a quirky or unusual lens
  • Interviews with artists and writers exploring emerging or new literary directions

Visual Art

We publish photographs and other works of visual art (i.e., illustrations, paintings, collages, digital art, etc.) in both colour and black and white. All art and photos submitted must be high resolution and uploaded in either .JPG or .TIFF form. Please submit all pieces at one time (10 files max.) and include a brief artist’s statement with your submission.

We are especially interested in visual work with a literary character, such as calligraphy, comics, and images that tell a story.
