Sonnet for a Philosophy of Living

So many aspects have been simplified     as we slide past

another artificial turning point         the planet spinning its circuit

of the sun         we measure from that point         still following the path

we set ourselves       so many years ago       still       for the large part

contented with the life we have created       no paradise

this         and never would we claim it such       not being so foolish

but if life is to be a song         then let it be a joyful song       let it

overwhelm the darkness that defies us       from hideous corners of

this world       we have no religion      no spiritual beliefs to help

us navigate a perfect life       instead we focus on a purely philosophical

intent       a plumb line       that bisects the material and the idealistic

attempts to avoid the egoistic and ungenerous       who we are

exists in language         exists within neurology         and in biology

physiologically consistent         my heart and yours         are so alike.
